ANCIENT & EARLY COINS: SO-CALLED “BARGAIN LIST”

WHAT IS LEFT!

These are generally “budget” coins, mostly lower quality, but with some interesting, scarce & decent items. I have tried to price everything with humility, to make them go away. While everybody claims “conservative grading,” I aim to describe coins so that buyers will be happy rather than disappointed. (But absolute return privilege nevertheless applies.) Feel free to contact me with any questions, etc. I try to be easy to deal with.

25. ELYMAIS, Orodes I, 2^nd cent AD, Æ Drachm, bust l./Artemis bust r, GIC-5892 (Sear, Greek Imperial Coins); VF, pale brown (cleaned), rev somewhat off-ctr. (A VF brought $39 on $50 bid in my 5/10 sale). 14.95

48. METAPONTUM (?) 13 mm piece, pale beige color, very light, ceramic? Athena head r/grain ear; F-VF/F, ragged edge. 3.30

Ant, IOVI CONSERVAT, Jupiter stg l; AVF, well centered, rev somewhat crude, toned silvered surfaces with spots of brown encrustation. 11.95

133. SALONINA, Ant, CONCORDIA AVGG, 2 figures clasping hands; F-VF, sl short of flan at one edge crowding some lgnd, silver color, a bit grainy, dark area on rev. 10.45

141. POSTUMUS, Ant., MONETA AVG, Moneta stg l; VF, centered on a large sl ragged flan, toned silver color, rev somewhat softly struck, portrait well detailed. (An AVF brought $51, Wayne Phillips 8/02.) 18.95

143. Ant, PAX AVG, Pax stg l; VF, obv just sl off-ctr, silvery-brown, rev better struck than most. (A VF with soft lgnds realized $31 on $60 bid in my 3/08 sale.) 22.50

157. TETRICUS II, Ant, SPES PVBLICA, Spes adv l; obv VF-EF, somewhat off-ctr losing some lgnd, excellent detailed portrait; rev off-ctr & rather poorly struck. 14.95

168. LICINIUS I, Argenteus, Bust left hldg mappa & scepter/Ruler flying on eagle; around G/AVG, unround (chipped?) flan, mucky obv surface. Much of design clear on rev. Silver color. Candidate for a “worst known” collection. 4.95

174. THEODOSIUS I, Æ4, SALVS REPVBLICAE, Victory dragging captive, SMNB; Choice VF, nrly centered with lgnds essentially all there, good dark patina, portrait with much detail. (A VF realized $26 on $60 bid in my 11/05 sale.) 14.60

186. JUSTIN II, 5 Nummia, S-363, Monogram/Large EB, VF/F, elongated flan, sl highlighted patina, monogram pretty strong, sl blemishing on rev. 7.60

189. Follis, S360, Year XI(I?, the second I off flan), Offic. A, F, rev sl off-ctr, medium brown, sl crudeness, obv figures strong. 6.80

201. MANUEL I, Tetarteron, S-1975, around F, smooth dark patina, somewhat ill-struck, but much is visible. 5.75

235. RIGA, Billon Solidus 1648, Queen Christina, EF, a little off-ctr, sl unround flan, but well struck, with nice silvering & luster. 7.95

236. Solidus, Carl Gustaf, 1654-60 but date clearly reads “14,” error, AVF, centered, a little crude, somewhat uneven color. 5.50

249. TABARISTAN, Sasanian style Ar Hemidrachm, Bust r/fire altar & attendants, Afzut, 786-809, Choice mint state or virtually so, selected from hoard for strong strike. (A GEF brought $205, Leu 12/19.) 28.95

252. — — Suleiman, 776-80, distinctive & scarce type with Arabic letter inside a diamond in place of King’s face. Mint state or virtually so, cherry-picked from hoard for strong strike. 44.95

256. PALEMBANG (Sultanate in Neth. East Indies, Indonesia) Tin pitis, before 1821. These were rare & never seen in numismatic commerce before recent hoard. There are many different types & varieties (KM lists only 2 varieties (really the same), F @ $20-25.) G-VG well mixed types 30 for 11.95, 100 for 29.95, 300 for $79
